WAII, IGI LAUNCH INSURANCE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN NIGERIA

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><font face="Arial"><b style=""><span lang="EN-GB">Lagos,</span></b><span lang="EN-GB"> 17<b style=""> September, 2008</b>: The West African Insurance Institute (WAII), in collaboration with Industrial and General Insurance Plc (IGI), Nigeria’s leading insurance company, has launched the Insurance Foundation Certificate (IFC), a human capital development training programme for insurance and non-insurance practitioners as well as personnel whose responsibility include the handling of insurance matters. </span></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-GB"><o:p><font face="Arial"> </font></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-GB"><font face="Arial">The Deputy Managing Director (Operations) of IGI, Mr. Rotimi Fashola, who is also WAII’s Country Representative in Nigeria, said: “This initiative is intended to strengthen the insurance industry in Nigeria particularly because knowledge-based personnel will drive the business in a post-consolidation era.”</font></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-GB"><font face="Arial">“IGI is highly honoured to have been accorded the privilege of providing a study centre for this international capacity building programme, which is soon expected to run simultaneously in Lagos and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory,” Fashola said.</font></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-GB"><font face="Arial">Director General of WAII, Dr. Femi Ikupolati, said: “This programme, which is new in Nigeria, is a three-month serious mental challenge course designed to capture non-insurance personnel working in insurance companies as well as staff handling insurance in non-insurance companies and update the knowledge base of everyone,” stressing, “It will, broadly, also provide valuable insight into the global practice of insurance and deepen the knowledge base of participants so as to engender the delivery of quality service in the industry.”</font></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-GB"><font face="Arial">He explained that the programme, which commenced recently at the IGI Training School at Monarch Communications Building in Victoria Island, Lagos, will run from September to November, 2008 and will cover Basic Principles of Insurance; Communications; Introduction to General Business; Principles and Practice of Life Assurance as well as Marketing Strategies for Insurance.</font></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-GB"><font face="Arial">“The Insurance Foundation Certificate (IFC) is internationally recognised and it qualifies participants for exemption from some stages of higher insurance certificate programmes,” Ikupolati said, adding, “IGI Plc was selected to handle the programme in Nigeria because of its drive to improve the insurance business in Nigeria and because of its consistent commitment to WAII over the years.”</font></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-GB"><font face="Arial">WAII, which is based in Banjul, capital of The Gambia, is an initiative of the five anglophone West African countries. It was established in 1978 with the objective of providing a platform for the upgrade of knowledge base of professional and non-professional personnel in the insurance industry. </font></span></p>
