IGI APPOINTED GHANA 2008 OFFICIAL INSURER
In recognition of its growing stature as an insurer of repute in Africa and a big backer of sports in the continent, the Industrial And General Insurance Plc (IGI) has been appointed the Official Insurer of the forthcoming 26th MTN Africa Cup of Nations tagged “Ghana 2008”.
The endorsement came at a contract signing ceremony attended by officials of IGI and Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations Local Organising Committee (ACNLOC), held on Wednesday, January 9 in Accra, Ghana, venue of the opening match of the competition held in four cities in the West African country between January 20 and February 10, 2008.
The contract, worth over US$600,000 (N72million) made IGI the exclusive Official Insurance Company for Ghana 2008. By this, IGI will provide Insurance cover for all the participating teams, officials and players engaged in the tournament, as well as cover for all the stadia, training pitches and LOC offices to be used during the tournament.
The contract was signed on behalf of IGI by the Company’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr Remi Olowude, OON, while Ghana 2008 ACNLOC’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Rex Danquah signed on behalf of the ANCLOC.
Speaking on the development, Executive Vice Chairman of IGI, Mr Remi Olowude, OON said IGI’s appointment is a reflection of the Company’s increasing role in the African insurance market. “Our continental expansion is geared towards helping the African people and their economies to develop, and this is being recognised everywhere. We are going to ensure that Ghana 2008 is well covered and that the ANCLOC gets value for the money it is spending,” he said.
He further noted that IGI has a wide reputation as a supporter of sports in Nigeria and Africa, and the Company’s role in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations is a continuation of its commitment to the development of Africa sports and the strengthening of African unity and brotherhood through sports.
“Being the Official Insurer of Ghana 2008 is just the beginning; we have a lot that we are going to do for African sports in the next couple of months. The new IGI is going to take the African sports stage by storm,” he enthused.
IGI, which recently transformed to a Public Liability Company (Plc), is the biggest insurance company in Nigeria with N22.5billion in Shareholders’ fund and N28.2billion Assets base. The Company also recently acquired an insurance firm, Network Insurance Company Limited, Ghana which has now been renamed IGI Ghana Limited.
The 26th MTN Africa Cup of Nations will be contested by 16 teams, namely the national football teams of Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa, Cameroun, Mali, Republic of Benin, Egypt, Namibia, Guinea, Morocco, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, Senegal and Tunisia.
IGI has consistently been the Official Insurer to all the Nigerian national football teams, namely the Super Eagles, the Super Falcons, the Flying Eagles, the Golden Eaglets and the U-23 Olympic Dream Team.
